About the Centre
An independent research centre closing the knowledge gap between the two shores of the Red Sea.
The idea
The relationship between the Gulf and the Horn of Africa across the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab is among the most consequential strategic files of our time. Yet despite the density of events along this corridor, Arabic-language scholarship on it remains scattered and episodic. The Centre exists to fill that space with regular, independent research that looks at both shores together rather than at each in isolation.
Vision
To be a leading, independent research reference for understanding and analysing relations between the Arab Gulf and the Horn of Africa, contributing rigorous knowledge in support of stability, development and integration.
Objectives
- Produce studies, indices and policy reports on maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, on navigation, and on Gulf–African political and economic relations.
- Track Gulf investment in the ports and projects of the Horn of Africa, supply chains, and food and water security.
- Cover migration and labour movement between the Horn of Africa and the Gulf, conflict and displacement, and peacebuilding.
- Convene conferences and roundtables for researchers and decision-makers from both sides, build the capacity of early-career researchers, and publish in Arabic and English alike.
